It’s Valentine’s Day from Sophie’s Creche!
For Valentine’s Day, the children have made crowns from rolled typek paper and red paper. Typek paper is a common paper that schools and offices use in South Africa. The two little hearts are for the children’s parents. The red represents a beautiful heart while the white represents peace.
Much like America, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in South Africa on February 14th. For many in South Africa, traditional tokens of love are flowers, candy, or cards to loved ones.
Young couples will celebrate with a romantic dinner. It is common on February 14th to see women literally wearing their heart on their sleeve. They pin the name of their boyfriend on the sleeve of their outfit. Even though this is a custom in South Africa, it is still considered rare for men to advertise their girlfriend's name on their Valentine’s Day shirt.
